Mary McGowan

My approach to psychotherapy has developed through many years of academic study, clinical practice and ongoing specialist training. I believe that becoming a psychotherapist is not something that ends with a qualification. My work continues to evolve through further study, reflection and an ongoing curiosity about the many dimensions of human experience — psychological, relational, embodied and symbolic.

My training reflects this development, bringing together established psychological understanding with trauma-informed, relational, somatic and depth approaches.

My understanding of psychotherapy has also been shaped by life beyond the consulting room. I have come to appreciate that our relationship with ourselves can change profoundly when we begin to recognise how much of what we once judged or rejected was, in fact, an attempt to survive.

My Celtic background has also shaped my appreciation of ancestry, belonging and the often-unspoken stories we carry across generations. I believe that coming home to ourselves can involve not only discovering who we are, but also honouring what came before us — recognising what deserves to be remembered, reclaimed and given its rightful place.

This understanding informs the compassion, curiosity and respect I bring to my work. I believe that beneath even our most deeply established patterns there may be possibilities for greater freedom, connection and a more authentic experience of ourselves.
